Try this:

Double Design Painting
. You need: 3 pieces of string about 18" long, 3 colors of poster paint. 9x12 white paper, news paper.

1. Set up your work space. Spread out the news paper to work on.
2.  In 3 small containers ( you could use an egg container) pour out the paint.
3. Put one string in each paint color. Leave one end of the string out of the paint to keep it clean.
4. Fold the paper in half and then unfold it.
5. Place one of the painted strings on one side of the paper, looping and curling it around. The clean end of the string should hang over the side of the paper so that you can grab it and pull on it.
6. Fold the paper over again and hold it down with one hand.
7. Pull on the string!!
8. Repeat this with the other colors. Experiment by pulling string fast or slow.

Try different size strings, jewelry chains, ribbons or yarns.

 American Gothic

The Gold of Azure

Sketch Book Ideas:

1. American Gothic: Get two people in your family to pose like the picture above. Have them hold something funny and put on hats. Tell them to wear the most serious possible. Draw people in pencil first to get the basics. Add a comical background or draw your house. Color in with colored pencils.

2. Stuffed Animal Still Life: Get out all your favorite stuffed animals and place on your bed or dresser. Group them close together with the tallest in the center. Before you draw stop and take a good look. Using a light pencil line ( that you can erase) quickly draw the basic shapes you see,. Let your eyes do the drawing.  Add details over these lines. Fourth and Fifth graders practice shading in the shapes.

3. It's all in the toes: Find the largest sheet of paper in house or tape some paper together on the backside.  Tape this to the floor to hold it down.  Take off your shoe and place a pencil between your toes. Are you a righty or a lefty?? Draw what ever you see in front of you.  Yes with your foot! Practice, practice, practice and bring it to class and show me.
