Fall 2008 Grants
Jennifer Adams
and Mark Kowalski, co-advisors of the BH-BL Green Club
The funds will be used to purchase
paper-recycling containers for each room and office in the high
school. The club will work with T.A. Predel and Company, Inc.
of Schenectady to pick up the paper and the company will pay the
club a dividend. These bins are fire and building code
compliant. The coast is $9 for each bin and $100 for shipping.
The amount of paper to be recycled will be measured by weight.
Amount granted: $1,000.00
Jill Bonacio and
Marty Pangburn,
Pashley Elementary School
The funds will be used to purchase books and start-up supplies for
1001 Book Kids Program at Pashley to promote early literacy skills
for incoming kindergarten students. 100 bags will be prepared
and in the main office corridor for families to borrow. The
total cost is close to $6,000. $4,500 has been collected
within the Pashley community.
Amount granted: $1,001.00
Mary Anne Doyle
and Carolyn Litynski, High School
Math Dept
The
funds will be used to purchase the data-collecting device titled
"Calculator Based Laboratory2 (CBL2). It allows students to
perform hands-on experiments, collect real-time date, and see the
uses of mathematics and technology in "the world." It will be
used in all four years of high school mathematics, thus serving a
wide range of mathematic students. Four math teachers will use
the CBL initially to conduct experiments in their classes and then
in-service training will be provided for the rest of the department.
Amount granted: $1,500.00
Roger Kopa,
Pashley
Elementary School
The funds will be used to purchase a touch-screen monitor.
That, together with a projector and software already in the
classroom, will create a 'Smartboard' for a more reasonable cost.
The monitor will be available to the entire school. This is a
cost effective way of using technology.
Amount granted: $500.00
Paul Federoff, High School Physics
The grant will be used to purchase sets of
digital camcorders for use in video analysis of motion in physics
labs. These would be used in Introduction classes, Regents and
AP courses. The application states, "These cameras would give
us tremendous freedom for studying motion." Students would be
able to study motion outside the classroom (i.e. the building, in
the gym). Web cams have been used with the disadvantage of
having to be connected to a computer. Updated technology will
reduce the time required dealing with the computer and allow more
time for analysis.
Amount granted: $1,092.00 (enough for 6 sets)
Brian Watts, High School Science Dept.
The
funds will be used to purchase a carrying case for the lock-out
buzzer system purchased last semester. The system has been
used by the Science Club and in Science classes to prepare for
competitions (the Science Club won the Regional Science Bowl and
went on to the Nationals), test and Regents. The case will
keep the system from getting damaged and keep the cords untangled.
Amount granted: $168.00
