How do animals spend the winter?

Winter is cold. There is snow on the ground. People live in warm houses. What do animals do?

Some animals sleep all winter. It is not a sleep that they wake up from every day.  It is a very deep sleep called hibernation.

Some animals who stay active in winter grow a new coat of fur or feathers that is white. This makes it harder to see them in the snow.  We call this camouflage.

Some birds and other animals travel to warmer places in the winter. We call this migration. When they reach the warmer place it is easier to find food.
