Charlton Heights Library Media CenterThe Charlton Heights Library Media Center was enlarged and completely remodeled during the summer of 2002. Our new space is approximately 3,200 sq. feet, where we offer access to more than 10,000 books, 700 periodicals, and 200 videos. We have a 19-station Dell computer lab which is used to teach students about accessing information via the Internet and library catalog, as well as for word-processing, creating slide presentations, and utilizing other software packages purchased by the district. Our library is a busy place. There are times when all three instructional areas, the library classroom, the story steps, and the computer lab, house students receiving instruction simultaneously from the librarian, classroom teachers, or other staff. In addition, there is a small office space used for library administrative duties, and a teacher center with conference table and professional books, videos and magazines. Charlton Heights Library Rules and Procedures Kindergarteners begin their year by borrowing one book per week. We start by offering them a selection of appropriate (and popular!) picture book titles from which they may choose something that appeals to them. In October, when they have begun to get used to the routines in the classroom and the library, they are allowed to make their own selection from the shelves in the picture book section. Later in the year, usually after the December holiday, students are allowed to begin taking home 2 books, and for their second selection they may choose a nonfiction book, an easy-reader book, or another picture book. Students in grades 2-5 are allowed to borrow up to 4 items at a time, and first-graders are allowed 3 items. This could include a magazine and a video, if the student has a video-borrowing contract signed by a parent or guardian on file in the library. The loan period for books and magazines is 2 weeks. We give verbal reminders for books and magazines overdue less than 2 weeks, and students may continue to borrow up to their 4 item limit. For books and magazines overdue more than 2 weeks, we suspend the student's borrowing privileges until the overdue item is returned. The loan period for videos is 1 week. This is to ensure that videos are watched and returned promptly so others may have a chance to view them. Click here for more information about our school...
